ABOUT SINUS LIFT
A sinus lift is a surgical procedure which is performed in order to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw and may be required before getting dental implants on the upper jaw. If there is bone loss, the sinus has to be moved up in order to make space for a bone graft. Patients usually have to wait around 6 months for the bone graft to settle before the implants are implanted.
A sinus lift may be needed in cases where patients are planning to get dental implants on the upper jaw. If the jaw bone needs augmenting with a bone graft, it may be necessary to move the sinus up. Placing an implant with little bone support increases the risk of implant failure, but can also cause a perforation of the sinus membrane.

HOW TO FIND QUALITY TREATMENT ABROAD
BEFORE SINUS LIFT ABROAD
A range of materials may be used as bone matter in this procedure. A patient may use their own bone material or else use donor material. This needs to be prepared before the procedure. For patients using their own bone matter, this is usually taken from their hip or tibia ahead of the procedure.
HOW IS IT PERFORMED
The dentist will usually make an incision in the gums, and then expose the jawbone. They can then cut a hole into the bone, through which they can gently push the sinus upwards, and then pack in the bone graft material (either artificial bone or their own or a donor bone material). After this, the gums will be closed again and stitched shut.
Materials
Bone material – this can be artificial bone substitute, a graft from the patient’s own bone or bone from a donor.
Anesthesia
Patients have a number of anesthetic options for this procedure. Local and general anesthesia, or less commonly, intravenous sedation or nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas).

The Sinus Lift takes 90 to 120 minutes.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER SINUS LIFT
Post procedure care
After the sinus lift, the dentist will usually provide a gauze pad to bite down on – applying gentle pressure should help to stop site from bleeding. Patients should change the gauze pad every hour or so. It is normal for the gauze to become red, however patients should seek help if the site continues to bleed heavily. Some patients use ice packs to reduce the swelling, and it is important to avoid excessive mouth rinsing in order to allow the surgery site to form a blood clot and stop bleeding. It is important not to smoke. Avoid blowing your nose for one week.
Possible discomfort
After this procedure it is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort. This usually subsides after 2 or 3 days, although a slightly longer recovery period is normal.

Success rates
This procedure is largely successful. In cases where the sinus membranes are ruptured and repaired by the dentist, the second attempt is almost always successful as the sinuses heal thicker.
