ABOUT IMPACTED TOOTH EXTRACTION
An impacted tooth is a tooth which has been unable to emerge through the gums. This usually happens because of overcrowding, and is most common with wisdom teeth. It can result in the tooth only partially erupting or becoming fully impacted beneath the gum.
The impacted tooth can remain beneath the gums and may not cause any pain or swelling, however, many impacted teeth can put pressure on neighboring teeth, and can cause infection if a gum flap forms over a partially impacted tooth.
Patients who have a problematic impacted wisdom tooth, may experience bad breath, pain, and swelling of the gums and jaws. Sometimes the dentist may recommend removing an impacted tooth which is not causing problems, in an effort to prevent future problems which may occur.
