ABOUT HAIRLINE LOWERING SURGERY
Hairline lowering surgery, also called forehead reduction, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of a large forehead.
The procedure is commonly sought after by patients who have a high hairline or have a receding hairline and want to the lower the hairline to reduce the size of the forehead and is particularly popular among women. Some patients may benefit from a hair transplant, rather than hairline lowering surgery. Hairline lowering surgery is not recommended for men with a receding hairline as a result of male pattern baldness, as the hairline is likely to recede further.
The procedure involves the removal of a strip of skin from the front of the hairline, and the hairline is lowered and attached into place. The procedure is usually performed with a local anesthetic and sedation. The procedure may require stretching the scalp skin with a tissue expander. The scar is usually hidden behind the hairline, making it difficult to notice.

The patient will have a consultation with the plastic surgeon where the goals of the surgery are discussed, as well as the patient’s suitability for the procedure.
It is not usually necessary to shave one’s head before this procedure.
HOW IS IT PERFORMED
For patients looking to lower their forehead up to around 5cm, a strip of skin is removed and the hairline lowered and fixed behind the hairline, usually resulting in a scar-free appearance.
For patients requiring a move extensive move (6cm+), this procedure is more invasive and requires the temporary fit of a tissue expander (2-3 weeks) before the procedure can be performed.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER HAIRLINE LOWERING SURGERY
Post procedure care
After the procedure you will have staples / stitches in for the first few days to one week. The skin on the head may feel tight and strange at first, but after a few months this will go away.
Possible discomfort
Swelling and bruising are to be expected, and two days of complete rest is recommended.
Abstain from any strenuous physical activity for two weeks after the procedure.
