ABOUT NECK LIFT

A neck lift is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the neck and chin, by reducing wrinkles and the sagging of the skin. The surgery is performed on patients who are showing signs of aging through the development of wrinkles and loss of elasticity which causes the skin to sag.

The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat, and the remaining skin and muscles are pulled together and tightened.

The surgery is often performed simultaneously with facelift surgery.

BEFORE NECK LIFT ABROAD

The patient will have a consultation with the surgeon whereby the desired goals and results are discussed. If the procedure is being performed with a facelift procedure, then this will also be discussed. The surgeon will explore the patient’s medical history, and will assess the skin and bone structure.

The surgeon will likely advise that the patient refrains from smoking and drinking in the 2 weeks before the surgery, as well as avoiding certain medications such as aspirin.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED

Neck lift surgery can be carried out with either liposuction to remove excess fat, or by repositioning and removing loose skin, depending on the desired results. Most often, surgical incisions are usually made behind the ear and under the chin and are extremely discrete, however this varies depending on the targeted area of the neck lift.

The incision may be made beneath the chin or behind the ears, if platysmaplasty surgery is being carried out. This type of neck lift surgery targets the muscles of the neck and is performed on patients who have weakened or loose neck muscles. This type of surgery can also be performed endoscopically which is less invasive, however it can vary with each patient.

A cervicoplasty is a type of neck lift that targets the excess skin. The surgery requires making small incisions, through which the excess skin can be removed and repositioned so that it is tighter and fixed into placed with sutures.

Once the neck lift is complete, the incisions will be closed with sutures.

Anesthesia

Local anesthetic, local anesthetic with sedative, or general anesthetic.

Procedure duration

The Neck Lift takes 1 to 4 hours.

The surgeon reshapes the nose into the desired shape or size.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER NECK LIFT

Post procedure care

After the procedure, patients usually spend at least one night in hospital. They may have to have surgical drains attached to the site for the first 24 hours or so. The incisions will be sutured shut, and an additional bandage applied. It may take a couple of weeks for bruising or swelling to reduce.

Possible discomfort

During the first 24 hours post-surgery, patients are likely to find movement difficult, and as such should have a friend or relative on hand to help. The first two or three days should be spent mostly in bed.

After a week, the majority of the swelling and discomfort ought to have subsided, but patients should refrain from strenuous activity for several more weeks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The vast majority of patients who undergo neck lift surgery are very satisfied with the results. There is a low rate of revision surgery within 10 years of this procedure being performed.

How long the results from a neck lift last depends a lot on the patient and the specifics of the procedure being performed. On average, most patients say they see the results for about 5 to 7 years. Your surgeon can give you a more accurate estimate for your individual case.

Neck lift procedures carry a similar risk to any procedure performed under general anesthesia, and include blood clots, excessive bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia, and infection. Other complications associated with neck lifts include unfavorable scarring, nerve injury, hair loss near incisions, facial asymmetry, and changes in skin sensitivity. Your risk can be reduced by selecting an experienced, reputable surgeon.

Where the incisions are made depends on the type of neck lift being performed. Your doctor should go over these details with you during the consultation. The most common sites for incisions include along the hairline near the sideburns, under the chin, and along the side of the face near the ear. Limited incision or “minimally invasive” neck lifts usually only have incisions near the ear.

Neck lift surgery is not indicated as a treatment for snoring. A sleep study should be undergone to determine the cause of the snoring.
