ABOUT INLAYS/ONLAYS
An inlay or onlay is similar to a filling, but it is custom-made in a laboratory. This means it can be made of very hard material, such as porcelain or gold, and it can be used to reconstruct a large part of the tooth.
An inlay or onlay may be used for a large cavity, particularly if the tooth is missing one side, for a cracked tooth, or a tooth where previous fillings have failed. It is a good option for patients seeking a very durable, esthetically pleasing option to fix a damaged tooth. This procedure is also good for patients looking to save a tooth before a full crown is needed.
Recommended for
- Large cavity
- To replace a filling
TIME REQUIREMENTS
- Average length of stay abroad: 4 – 5 days.
Depending on the material used, patients may have to wait longer for the inlay or onlay to be created in the laboratory.

HOW TO FIND QUALITY TREATMENT ABROAD
BEFORE INLAYS/ONLAYS ABROAD
Before receiving an inlay or an onlay, patients should consider the different options available. Alternative treatment options include a filling or a crown. The dentist will usually take an X-ray and assess the tooth to see if this treatment is appropriate. In some cases, eg. if a large cavity has caused the root to become infected, a root canal treatment may be recommended first.
HOW IS IT PERFORMED
At the first appointment, the dentist will remove any old fillings and clean the area thoroughly. The dentist will then take an impression of the tooth, which is sent to the dental laboratory where the inlay or onlay is built. At this appointment, a temporary fixture will be applied.
At the second appointment, once the inlay or onlay has been made, the temporary fitting will be removed and the permanent inlay or onlay is fitted.
Materials
Typically inlays and onlays are made from highly resistant materials like gold or porcelain, although sometimes resins are also used.
Anesthesia
Local anesthetic.
Procedure duration
The Inlays/Onlays takes 2 to 4 hours.
At the first appointment the dentist will remove the existing filling if necessary and then prepare the tooth for the inlay or onlay. The dentist will then take a mould of the mouth to send to the laboratory so that they can create the inlay or onlay. The next appointment will be some days later once it is ready to be cemented into place.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER INLAYS/ONLAYS
Post procedure care
Patients should avoid eating on the tooth, and the dentist may recommend a liquid diet for the 1 to 2 days. Sticky sweets should be avoided as they might pull out the inlay or onlay.
Possible discomfort
Patients may experience some minor discomfort following the procedure, and the tooth’s new surface may feel unusual for the first few days.
