ABOUT CIRCUMCISION

Circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin which covers the glans penis (the tip of the penis). The procedure can be done by cutting around the foreskin with a scalpel, under either a local or general anesthetic. In young patients, there is also the option to use a compression ring, which is applied and causes the foreskin to fall off after several weeks.

Recommended for

Circumcision may be a solution in cases of chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs), phimosis (tight foreskin), frenulum breve (a short frenulum), or balanoposthitis (inflammation of the glans and foreskin).

BEFORE CIRCUMCISION ABROAD

Depending on the cause for circumcision, doctors may want to try alternative treatment options first. For example, phimosis can sometimes be treated with regular exercises to slowly, manually retract the foreskin over the glans.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED

The penis and surrounding area are cleaned, and an anesthetic is injected at the base of the penis, or else applied to the penis as a cream. For children, a clamp or plastic ring will be attached to the end of the penis, and the foreskin will be removed via this method.

Adults may wish to have the procedure done with general anesthesia, so that they are unconscious throughout. The surgeon will usually make an incision downwards in the foreskin, and then cut away the loose foreskin. Afterwards, the penis will be covered with an ointment, such as petroleum jelly, and wrapped with gauze.

Anesthesia

Local or general anesthetic.

Procedure duration

The Circumcision takes 30 to 45 minutes.

The surgeon reshapes the nose into the desired shape or size.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER CIRCUMCISION

Post procedure care

After surgery, it may be painful to pass urine. A dressing is usually applied, and should be worn for the first few days. Applying petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) to the glans penis may prevent the dressing from sticking, and soaking the dressing in water can help to remove it. If non-dissolvable stitches are used, patients should return to the clinic to get these removed. Patients should avoid sexual activity for around 4 to 6 weeks to allow the area to heal properly.

Possible discomfort

Adult and adolescent subjects are usually advised to take over-the-counter painkillers in the evenings for a week afterwards to help with discomfort caused by erections in the night.
