ABOUT BUCCAL FAT EXTRACTION

Buccal fat removal is the surgical removal of the fat pad in the lower part of the cheek to improve the contour of the face and reduce puffiness. Buccal fat pads are located on each side of the face, at the sides of the forehead, extending down to the cheeks. Buccal fat rests between the buccinator muscle, which is the muscle that aids chewing.

There are a number of theories regarding the function of buccal fat, with many believing it functions to help chewing or suckling, and that it helps to move and protect some of the facial muscles. However, despite these theories, there is no change to facial or cheek function if the buccal fat pads are removed, other than the physical appearance of more prominent cheek bones.

Having puffy and large cheeks due to large buccal fat pads is often referred to as “chipmunk cheeks”, and can occur in patients regardless of weight and diet, and is often the result of a genetic predisposition. Removing the buccal fat creates more contoured cheeks and can add definition to the face.

BEFORE BUCCAL FAT EXTRACTION ABROAD

Patients should consult with the surgeon to outline their goals and discuss the procedure. Before the surgery, the patient will be administered a local anesthetic and sedation.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED

An incision is made on the inside of the cheek, and the fat pads are removed. As the incision is made inside the mouth, there is no external scarring. Once the buccal fat has been removed, the incision is then stitched with dissolvable sutures.

Anesthesia

The surgeon will usually use a local anesthetic with a sedative.

Procedure duration

The Buccal Fat Extraction takes 1 to 2 hours.

The surgeon reshapes the nose into the desired shape or size.

Possible discomfort

Following the procedure, the patient will be given anti-inflammatory medication and painkillers for the first few days after the operation.
