ABOUT FLUORIDE APPLICATION

Fluoridation is the application of fluoride to the teeth to make tooth enamel less vulnerable to tooth decay. Fluoride is a mineral which is found in the enamel on teeth. Over time, the enamel undergoes demineralization and remineralization, losing and regaining minerals. By applying fluoride to the teeth, the remineralization process is encouraged. This makes the enamel less vulnerable to tooth decay.

Fluoridation can help patients with high-risk of decay, patients with dentin hypersensitivity, exposed roots, or braces/brackets which may damage enamel. This procedure is also appropriate for patients suffering with dry mouth conditions such as Sjogren’s syndrome, and those suffering with gum disease.

Fluoride is sometimes added to water supplies, and can also be found in toothpaste and mouthwash. Professional fluoride treatment is in the form of a gel, foam or varnish applied directly to the teeth.
